What’s so special about traveling. Why do people pack their bags, leave the comfort of their homes to journey thousands of miles around the world? Why do some people take extended periods to backpack across the world? Who are these people, what drives them to make such decisions, what motivates them, and what’s all the fuss about travel? Indeed, there are way less expensive hobbies.

These are some of the questions that non-travelers ask all the time. I know my friends have asked me why I love to travel so much more than once.

Luckily, I qualify as one of the right people to answer some questions as to why people love to travel or why I love to travel. The truth is the reasons and motivation to do just about anything, not just travel. As much as I can guess, people do things for different reasons. Travel is no different.

As much as possible, I’ll try to describe my reasons from a personal standpoint, although I’m sure some of these reasons are relevant among different people from all works of life. I can always say why I love to travel, but I’m sure many people share the same reasons as me.

You can also go through this post to know why people love to travel and why traveling is good for you.

For me, Traveling was never really on the agenda, growing up as I grew up in a traditional conservative household. Travel, if ever, was limited to visiting relatives. I remember I used to consider any trip more than an hour too stressful.

This was my life, well, up until 10 years ago when I went on a camping trip with some friends. That single trip changed my entire outlook on travel.

At first, I would do a few rounds of travel occasionally, then the trips became more frequent, and now I can barely count the number of places I have been. Traveling is one of the most exciting activities for me.

I get to see the world through a new lens, learn more about myself and the world, and grow. People have different reasons for travel.

Reasons Why I Love to Travel

why i love to travel

To gain better insight into why I love to travel and why travel has become such a big part of mine and hundreds of people’s lifestyles, here are 7 reasons why I love to travel.

  • I love to travel to escape reality

Is it just me, or can life sometimes gets boring, stressful, or monotonous? Sometimes, I want to fall off the radar and jump the reality ship for a while. Travel affords me this luxury as I can decide to enjoy anonymity in new and unexplored places. Only by travel can you wake up and be who you are, do what you want, eat what you want for periods without anybody raising eyebrows. With travel comes freedom of spontaneity.

  • I love to travel to meet different cultures

Whether it’s the Zulu in South Africa or the Maori people in New Zealand. Traveling lets me encounter different cultures and societies that show me the importance of embracing our similarities and our peculiarities. I learn more about how we humans are not so different from each other and how we function as a product of our environment. Through this knowledge, I can understand, appreciate, and respect diverse perspectives and other ways of life.

  • Food

The jig is up. I can’t deny it anymore. I love food. Food is a big part of why I love traveling so much. You can’t blame me. When you travel, you see different delicacies and combinations you never thought existed. You realize that when it comes to food, there are no preferences, only favorites. If you are a foodie like me and you’d like to learn more about the different delicacies of the world (there are thousands of them), you should make traveling your thing. Food is also a reflection of people, so by finding out about the type of people eat, you can learn more about them.

  • To relax

In this fast-paced world, it’s easy to get lost in that work-house-bills loop. Stress builds up, and if we don’t find a way to relieve such pressure, it could be a problem. Fortunately, travel provides the perfect opportunity to take a break from the drama, demands, and deadlines of the real world. I like to disconnect from the stress and enjoy myself in natural settings; I find that it calms me. You could take trips too to find out what works best for you.

  • I love to travel because it helps me build and grow relationships

These days, because of work, schools, and other engagements, we hardly spend quality time with loved ones. Traveling together with loved ones can strengthen bonds. Whether it’s a weekend getaway with the spouse, a fun camping trip with the kids, or a family cruise, Traveling is an invaluable opportunity to connect deeper with loved ones.

Away from the family, Traveling is the perfect way to meet new friends and improve relationships with old ones. Some of the most helpful people I’ve met were on some of my trips.

  • I travel to challenge myself

A lot of times, we feel stuck, and life becomes a little tense. We may doubt ourselves and abilities, or you feel like you’re not where you should be. You should be doing more, seeing more, you crave new and exciting experiences. Travelling isn’t just your regular hobby. It’s perfect for testing yourself. Whether it’s ice swimming, learning a new language or finding your way around a crowded city, Traveling is the ideal push yourself to the limit. Figure out your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Overcoming challenges, builds confidence.

  • I love to travel to Learn

To a lot of people, this is the most important reason to travel. Learning is a big part of why people love to travel. Knowledge, real knowledge doesn’t only come from the wall of a classroom. Knowledge is in the world; it’s the geography of places and the sociology of people. There’s a different lesson for everywhere you visit, and diving into these new worlds is the best way to understand the uniqueness of different places and people. Whether you’re learning about history, people, or language, Traveling is the ideal way to immerse yourself in the whole learning process. They want to experience something unfamiliar and leave with new skills or knowledge.

There you have it, the 7 reasons why I love to travel.

Finally, as an avid traveler, I cannot overstate the joy and satisfaction I’ve gotten from traveling. I’ve learned and grown more than I could ever imagine. If I had to advise anybody, I’d say choose memories over things. It’s never been easier to travel. Take advantage, visit exotic places with loved ones, go on that camping trip, plan that long overdue couple’s getaway, see the world from a different lens. It’s those memories that last.
