MUSIC VS PERSONALITY: 8 GENRES THAT DESCRIBE WHO YOU ARE

We sometimes hear people say things like, “you are what you listen to.” I used to hear it all the time, but I never used to pay it any mind because, frankly, the idea that there are music genres that describe who you are sounded crazy to me. Spoiler alert- I was wrong.

Have you ever thought about what goes through people’s minds when they hear the kind of music you play? How they react when you play particular music, or are you guilty of this yourself, do you listen to people play music and almost instantly project the kind of person you think are in your head? If this describes you, you are not alone. For as far back as I can remember, I have been a fan of music. Through those years, I’ve seen musicians come and go, different genres of music emerge, others fall off. One thing has remained constant, though, my sentiments towards certain music and how no matter how musically versatile I claim to be, there seems to be certain music that does it for me. I’m particularly sentimental about EDM. It doesn’t matter where I am or what I’m doing; if I hear EDM, I have to jam.

Fortunately, I’m not the only one. There’s also an explanation for that. Would you believe if I told you some genres that describe who you are?

Music plays a massive role in the lives of people from different works of life. Just as we have varying preferences when it comes to books, movies, and even food, it’s the same with music. There are music genres that describe who you are to a large extent.

Sometimes you bond with people when you find out you have the same taste in music; other times, you might dislike someone because you hate his preferred music genre. Then again, a person’s taste in music does not reflect anything about them, and judging them based on this is shallow. Or is it?

  • Pop

Pop is first on my list of genres that describe who you are. Fans of pop music are indeed peculiar. Pop fans tend to be extroverts that may be a little lacking when it comes to creativity. This doesn’t take anything from them, though, as pop fans are usually high in self-esteem and don’t mind a hard-working day to get the juice running. If you find yourself drawn to chart-topping pop songs, you should be an extrovert that occasionally struggles with anxiety, but you’re generally drawn to people and will get your hands dirty working if you have to.

  • Rap & Hip-hop

Outgoing. Smart. Leader. Despite the aggressive and rebellious stereotype, these and more and some of the traits that describe hip-hop fans. These social animals have a lot of things in common with their pop friends like high self-esteem and immense positive energy. Hip hop fans tend to trust only information they can see and feel.

  • Rock

Rock fans are fascinating people. Because they are several subgenres in this category, it could be challenging to classify people. In general, rock fans are intuitive, skeptical, and sort of rebellious. Flexible in the face of adversity, they can easily adjust to suit situations. Classic rock fans are easy-going, hardworking, and love the nostalgic vibes; indie rockers, on the other hand, maybe slightly lazy, have lower self-esteem but generally the most creative of the bunch.

  • Metal

There’s a lot of misconception about metal fans. The horn throwing crew do not match a lot of the speculations around them. If you fall into this category, you are the direct opposite of pop fans, you are an introvert, intuitive and you tend to be boxed up in your imagination a lot of the time. Your imagination game is strong, and you can process information whether there’s tangible evidence or not. Reserved and highly creative, metal fans are known to be the closest to fans of classical music. If classical music fans had a younger population, it’d be metal fans. That doesn’t sound so bad for people that like death bands.

  • Classical

When people think of classical music fans, a lot of people picture snobbish, high-horsed older people. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. Classical music lovers are highly intuitive, intelligent, creative, and wait-for-it, fun.

  • R&B

Rhythm and Blues draw several fun extroverts. R&B fans are usually outgoing, social and have no problem expressing their emotions.

  • Country Music

Although a lot of country music is centered around heartbreak, country music fans are very stable emotionally. They are usually traditional, hardworking conservatives that give a lot of significance to a conventional lifestyle.

  • EDM

Finally, my personal favorite when it comes to genres that describe who you are. Electronic dance music, one of the best genres of music that exists right now. I admit, I may be a little biased, but since the inception of EDM, it has taken the world by storm and continue to grow as a force in the music world. Widely accepted, EDM ranges over different genres, but listeners are generally social and outspoken.

The beauty of EDM is that it can be infused with any genre of music, whether its pop, jazz, or Skrillex’s variation of metal. With EDM, there’s something for everyone.

Conclusion

At this point, it’s clear as day that there are underlying personality traits that determine the kind of music we listen to. Our choice of music genres describes who we are. It explains we tend to gravitate towards people that have the same taste of music that we do; if I had to guess, I’d say it’s the common personality drawing close to our matches. Regardless, it doesn’t mean that since you now know about genres that describe who you are, you can cut off your friends just because you don’t enjoy their playlist, for one, a lot of people listen to more than one genre and evaluating them based on that will be very inaccurate.

Secondly, music promotes, and while it gives the first impression to get a feel of what to expect from people. It certainly isn’t enough reason to cause division. The whole point of learning about genres that describe who you are is to understand the difference in people’s tastes, their personal choices, and how to interact better.
